Multicultural or Multiple Cultures - 12th May 2012:-
The event is about/aim People, groups and forums in Basingstoke were invited to share thoughts and engage in a discussion about the Basingstoke's community from the aspects of diversity and social cohesion. The discussion was based on a film screening that contained interviews of about 30 local participants. About 40 people attended the meeting.
The film was a part of a project named "A Portrait of Basingstoke" made by visual artist Ayat Alhaji. Please click here to see the video.
Feedback - The attendants were from various backgrounds including members from the Basingstoke & Dean County Council. At the discussion, few people talked about their experiences of being in a multicultural family and friends that has enriched their life with various practices and qualities. Participants seemed pleased to live within a "multicultural" society. Few stated that we have some isolated communities, and that there should be more work to encourage interaction. Some others stated that Basingstoke is doing well, and far better than other cities.
Basingstoke Deputy Mayor and his wife (who looked form the far East) were present; he complemented the work that forums accomplish to create some big diverse events, like "The world Party in the Park" which took place last summer when thousands of people attended.
A thought were brought up that forums could do some sort of "thematic" events, so attendants can share a story or tradition, which sounded like a productive idea to some.
Another person mentioned that there are enclosed communities who do not like to interact with others at all. A shared view was about involving school kids in more activities that forums organise.
The discussion was overwhelming, everyone had plenty of viewpoints to share, that extended over the designated time for the event/meeting.
A questionnaire was handed out to participants, and several people filled these with some positive and constructive comments that echoed the mentioned discussion.
